Moving on from learning Fractions to exploring Decimals. Why use Base Ten Blocks? Why use a flat (100 units) for the base of our vegetable garden? How do they relate to decimals?
This lesson was quite interesting. It allowed my students to explore the idea of having a denominator with 100 in order to convert to a decimal. A garden with only 25 units covered with corn, for example, written as a fraction is 25/100. The decimal is 0.25. Some students were quick to observe that the decimal was just the top number after putting the decimal point in the correct spot (one space from the right hand side for every zero in the bottom number). Discovery learning thanks to a vegetable garden :-)
