Health Class - Puberty

Yes, the dreaded unit on Puberty started this past week and guess what? The kids are ok!

We started out by establishing rules and norms for our upcoming class discussions and identifying an anonymous QUESTION BOX for any questions or concerns that students might be too scared or embarrassed to ask. Yes, there are quite a few questions deposited in the box already :-)

Each class will begin with a response to these questions in the first few minutes of class. So far, we have looked at the Stages of growth, defined Puberty and completed the following activities:

Health Projects on Alcoholism

Here are the T-shirt designs that my kiddies came up with a few weeks ago. The messages are GREAT!

Don't drink alcohol - plain and simple :-)

Now it's on to PUBERTY!!!

Can Geometry get any more interesting?

Making connections between Geometry and real-life using the Tinkercad web-based application.

Task: Construct a city using geometric shapes. Name the buildings, the shapes and calculate the surface area of each building.

3-D Figures

In this investigation, students gain experience identifying pyramids from nets and classifying these three-dimensional figures by their geometric properties. Students have opportunities to represent their understanding of three-dimensional figures physically, through drawings, and verbally, using appropriate mathematical language.

Day 4 Geometry and Spatial Sense

Today's lesson:

Day 2 and 3 Geometry Journey

Sketching triangles and making connections while exploring The Geometer's Sketchpad.

Two-Dimensional Shapes: Triangle Sort

We have moved on ..... Geometry is FUN!!

In this learning activity, students sort and classify triangles into three groups so that no triangle belongs to more than one group. This problem-solving lesson provides an opportunity for students to explore the properties of triangles and develop definitions of the different types of triangles.

Math Reflection

This post is a bit late but take a look at some of my students' Reflection at the end of our unit on Extending Multiplication with the Array. I think my students in general captured the BIG IDEAS -

*the commutative property of multiplication

* the associative property of multiplication

* the dimensions of length and width can be used to produce a square unit measurement of area for rectangles

*the dimensions of length, width, and height can be used to produce a cubic unit measurement of volume for rectangular solids

CONCLUSION - Students who are encouraged to experiment with their own solutions to mathematics problems develop a significantly deeper understanding of mathematics

Junior Achievement Program

Today's Junior Achievement program - Our Business World -was phenomenal!

In Junior Achievement’s Our Business World program, elementary students explore how businesses are created and what makes them thrive. Using games and multimedia, students learn about innovation, start-ups and self-employment.

Volunteers from local businesses provide students with a first-hand look at how business supports the community. During this interactive, in-class program students :
  • •  Learn how to distinguish what is a business and what it is not.
  • •  Explore where customers come from and how to keep them.
  • •  Discuss how business contributes to the well-being of a community.
  • •  Recognize that businesses can impact the environment in both positive and negative ways.
  • •  Learn about the history of some Canadian businesses and how they’ve changed over time.
  • •  Understand of the importance of innovation.
  • •  Describe what makes an entrepreneur innovative.
