Personal Safety Video

In Health class we have been looking at the different ways to be safe -Fire Safety, Road and Car Safety, Water Safety, Internet Safety and Personal Safety. My students made Public Service Announcements (PSAs) about each type of safety and I was really impressed with what they came up with.

Next class, we'll continue looking at personal safety.I will be showing the attached video in class. Please note it is aligned with what is in the curriculum.

Take a look at the expectations:

identify people (e.g., parents, guardians, neighbours, teachers, crossing guards, police, older students, coaches, elders) and supportive services (e.g., help lines, 9-1-1, Telehealth, public health units, student services) that can assist with injury prevention, emergencies, bullying, and abusive and violent situations

demonstrate the ability to deal with threatening situations by applying appropriate living skills (e.g., personal skills, including self-monitoring and anger management; interpersonal skills, including conflict resolution skills; communication skills, including assertiveness and refusal skills) and safety strategies (e.g., having a plan and thinking before acting; looking confident; being aware of surroundings; seeking help; drawing on cultural teachings, where appropriate, to analyse situations and develop responses)

explain how a person’s actions (e.g., negative actions such as name calling, making homophobic or racist remarks, mocking appearance or ability, excluding, bullying, sexual harassment; positive actions such as praising, supporting, including) can affect the feelings, self-concept, emotional well-being, and reputation of themselves and others

First Nations Research Graphic Organizer

Kudos to all the groups that presented this week on the different First Nations. Your presentation showed evidence of research. They were informative and very interesting. We learned a lot! Good job kiddies :-)

Random act of kindness

Two days ago I captured a wonderful, random act of kindness in my classroom. One boy was speaking in front of the class and another boy looked down and noticed that his shoelace was untied. He quickly went over and this is what I saw ....

Thanks for showing so much character Humza. You are AMAZING!!!

Waste Audit Follow Up

Today's Waste Audit Follow up was great! It was a good reminder for both the students and I as to what items are recyclable or non- recyclable. Many thanks to the City of Brampton's Clean City Program! It was appreciated!

Stinky Milk Experiment

What better way to learn about Chemical changes (changes that are irreversible) than to watch good milk go bad after about 3 weeks sitting on a shelf?

The smell is HORRENDOUS but it effectively proves that a chemical change did take place by turning the liquid into a solid (lumps). The milk cannot go back to being good. That change is IRREVERSIBLE!!!!

Gassy Balloon experiment

Changes in Matter
It's always a good idea to do something exciting especially after a break from school. Today in Science class my students were totally enthralled by the gassy balloon experiment.

It provided a good hands-on experience to learn how a gas is formed as a result of a chemical reaction.

Scientific explanation:

Vinegar is an acid, baking soda is a base, and when mixed together they create an acid-base reaction. In this case, the reaction created a gas called carbon dioxide. Gases need room to expand, so once the carbon dioxide filled the bottle, it moved into the balloon and inflated it.

Fraction Anchor Chart

Made these anchor charts for my students during the March Break. Now that we've moved on to Decimals I want to be absolutely certain that everyone has a good grasp of fractions. I think this might be needed after a week long break, then it's back to converting fractions to decimals and more fun stuff :-)

Nice visuals indeed. Giving the credit to Laura Candler. That woman is simply amazing!

Excellent visual aid!
