Exploring the relationship between area and perimeter

This was a really nice activity for students to consolidate their understanding of area and perimeter. The exploratory nature of the task brought out new discoveries. It prompted inquiry, insights and promoted a lot of rich discussions.  I took notes!

" I did not know that the area and perimeter could be the same"

"The rectangle is longer than a square so the sides are obviously going to be longer"

" The perimeter is the outside of the shape. According to the way you place the units, the perimeter changes. Even moving one unit changes the perimeter"

" If it is a longer shape, you can get more units"
