I think I can safely say that my students are beginning to see the light! Whooo hooo!!
Same volume but different surface area, hmmmmm........
Bonjour! My name is Kicia Abdur-Rashid and I've been a teacher in Canada for a number of years. This blog chronicles my journey teaching Grade 5. Come along with me as I share stories about teaching in the Junior Division!

Day 5 - Strategies
Objective:
*Thinking about the relationship between surface area and volume.
* deepening students' understanding of the associative and commutative properties of multiplication (these terms not used in class) but already some students are beginning to make important observations.
Take a look at their mathematical language:

Day 4 - Surface area of boxes
And the plot thickens ......... looking at surface areas of the boxes!
Day 4 -introduce a new context involving an exploration of the amount of cardboard needed to manufacture boxes and whether some box designs would be cheaper to manufacture than others

Day 3 - Math Congress and Reflection
Our Math journey continues with a Gallery Walk on Day 3 and our highly anticipated Math Congress. The kids really do love speaking about their strategies in front of the class! It's a beautiful, learning experience (even for me!) because we are opened to so many different strategies and ways of thinking.
Did not take pictures of the students' comments/feedback during the Gallery walk (and I regret it now!) but the kids had some really deep, constructive feedback and questions. Good job 5D!

Day 2 - Exploring Box Designs
Before and After student work samples. Today students were encouraged to develop a systematic approach to solving the problem of designing boxes. In developing their posters, they had to think about how to organize their information so that their work over the last two days could be conveyed to the whole group in a clear, concise, and thoughtful way.

So proud to share my students' work after Day One. Some already figured out the answer!
Look at the strategies used! Really impressive!

Dans la classe de francais ....
French class update - we're still working on our second AIM play (Louis la Grenouille). The students are reading and writing in French and will soon start their rehearsal of the play in groups. They will also write an alternate ending to the play (in french of course!) Looking forward to that!!!!!!
