Division #1

Today we started our unit on Division. Students wrote their understanding using mind maps. I think it's safe to say we're off to a good start!

Bonus Question from Multiplication Test

Answer:

Rooms: 118 rooms x 3 chairs = 354 chairs x 4 legs = 1416 legs (footings)

Great Hall Tables: 14 tables x 4 legs = 56 legs (footings)

Great Hall Stools: 14 tables x 4 stools = 56 stools x 3 legs = 168 legs (footings)

Total: 1416 footings + 56 footings + 168 footings = 1640 footings

Grade-level Prompt #2

The first Grade-level Math Prompt did not prove very challenging to our students hence a decision was made to redo the prompt with a richer, open-ended question that would engage students. The solution? A question taken from Marian Small's Open Questions for the Three-Part Lesson.

 It was indeed a BIG challenge but some students persevered and eventually figured it out. Great display of positive mindset kiddies. Keep up the AMAZING work!

Multiplication Mystery (Math/Literacy)

This mystery math problem was challenging for most students simply because most of them did not use all the information in the text. With the exception of one student, everyone was convinced that the answer was either $45, $450 or $360. After a very spirited debate from all the groups, the problem was discussed step by step on the board. Even before arriving at the solution, a lot of students realized where they went wrong. Great discussion kiddies!
