Draw a rectangle 12 cm by 4 cm. This rectangle represents 2/3 of the whole. What does the whole look like?

Solution to problem

There are 2 possibilities. Since three one-thirds (1/3) make up the whole the task is to determine what each 1/3 is. This could be found by halving the 12.

For example:

one -third = 6 x 4

two-thirds = 12 x 4

1 whole = 18 x 4

Another solution is to find 1/3  but this time halving the 2.

For example:

one -third = 12 x 2

two-thirds = 12 x 4

1 whole = 12 x 6
